Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis is a skin condition characterized by rough bumps that are scattered in different areas of the body. These rough bumps are generally prominent in the upper arms, buttocks and legs.

Individuals with keratosis pilaris, usually feel tan or pink-coloured bumps on their skin surface which can sometimes become irritated and inflamed resulting in a strong resemblance to acne. While keratosis pilaris is a harmless skin condition, it can be embarrassing for an individual to expose their skin during summer on the beach or at the pool.

Keratin, a protein found on the surface of skin, hair and nails is the major cause of keratosis pilaris. When too much keratin is produced it accumulates and forms plugs around hair follicles. When these plugs become inflamed they develop a tan or red colour and itch when the skin is very dry. These plugs are usually not painful, however, they can become painful when symptoms worsen during the winter season because the humidity levels are low and skin can become very dry.

Combing home care with the professional treatments helps to manage the appearance of keratosis pilaris. At Laser Genesis Skin Clinic we recommend daily use of PCA Dry Skin Relief Bar with loofa in the shower.
