LINE and WRINKLES

lines and wrinkles

Although everyone is subject to the effects of ageing, there are both preventative and counteractive measures that can be taken to improve our appearance, regardless of age.

This includes reducing the gradual appearance of lines and wrinkles on our faces.

Lines and Wrinkles can be either fine or deep in nature and are more prominent on parts of the body that frequently receive exposure to the sun, most often the face.

Prolonged exposure to rays of the sun causes collagen proteins within the skin to break down and result in the initial formation of fine lines.

Repeated sun exposure whether naturally or from excessive tanning are likely to aggravate these fine lines and render them deeper in appearance.

Types of Wrinkles

There are two different types of wrinkles, static and dynamic. Static wrinkles are visible even when the facial muscles are not being used to form and expression.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated movements of the muscles in the facial area whether consciously or unconsciously. They are commonly referred to as laugh lines, frown lines or squint lines.

Wrinkles that are created by repeated dynamic facial muscle movements are likely to become more static over time unless a method is introduced to prevent the muscles from contracting.

To stop expression lines from becoming deeper it is important to reduce or inhibit the neuromuscular activities that cause them.

This is difficult to do consciously, but with Botox injections, the use of the facial muscles that cause these dynamic wrinkles to deepen can be easily be neutralized.

Preventing Lines or Wrinkles

Obviously we can not presently modify our genetic profile and inherit parental genes with respect to our skin characteristics and others. But there are still preventative measures that can be taken to reduce the onset of lines and wrinkles. Following is a list of those over which we have control:

  • Reduce sun exposure
  • Use sunscreen
  • Apply skin moisturizers
  • Sleep on your back
  • Maintain a regular sleep pattern
  • Avoid environmental pollution
  • Reduce alcohol use
  • Avoid tobacco
  • Maintain body hydration with water
  • Control facial expressions
  • Engage a healthy diet
  • Supplement diet with antioxidants
  • Follow a good skincare routine

Treatments for Lines and Wrinkles

There are many surgical options to reduce or eliminate lines and wrinkles, but a less costly and non-invasive approach is to possibly consider microdermabrasion, clinical chemical laser peels, intense pulsed light treatments or skin resurfacing treatments.

Botox cosmetic treatments can also help to prevent the formation of facial lines caused by expressions. In addition, dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane can also help improve the fullness of facial skin by filling out lines, wrinkles and even scars.

The ageing process of the skin can never be stopped, but it can be slowed down considerably by the use of a good home skincare routine, improved diet and even some advanced skin treatments.
